Fires hotspots mostly detected in palm oil plantations in West Kalimantan

EoF News (PONTIANAK)-- NGOs in West Kalimantan analyzed that 217 fires hotspots detected by NASA Firms Eosdis during 28 June – 6 July 2015. 124 out of 217 hotspots or 57 percent was found in palm oil concessions and by districts, Kubu Raya is the most area hit by fires with 81 and followed by Ketapang and Sambas with 44 and 36 respectively.
Sulhani, Director of Titian, said that his organization along with Eyes on the Forest had monitored the hotspots distribution in West Kalimantan where haze that blanketed the capitol city Pontianak in the evening and cause health problems to residents.
Sulhani asked the West Kalimantan Police’s Forest and Land fires task force and the Province Government to take preventive and mitigation actions by collaborating with the District Governments and plantation concessions as 103 hotspots detected are located in peatlands.
Lutharif, Director of Kontak Rakyat Borneo, called on the police to ask responsibility from concessions where hotspots detected. “Not only detain residents and just blame them on the alleged forest and land fires,” he said adding that timber and palm oil plantations also hold responsibility to secure their area from forest fires as law stipulated.
